Oestra® vs Low-Dose Vaginal Estrogen

Why Oestra® Is Different from Low-Dose Vaginal Estrogen

This is one of the most common areas of confusion - because both use the vaginal route, but they are designed for very different purposes.

If you're currently using a low-dose vaginal estrogen product and considering a transition to Oestra®, it's important to understand that these therapies are not equivalent, even though they are both administered vaginally.

For most women, we recommend a gradual 2-week transition period when switching from low-dose vaginal estrogen to Oestra®. Rather than stopping your current therapy immediately, continue using your existing vaginal estrogen while beginning Oestra® and allow the two therapies to overlap for approximately two weeks. After that transition period, you can discontinue your previous therapy and continue with Oestra® alone.

This gradual transition helps support stable hormone levels and may reduce symptoms that can occur when changing hormone therapies.

With consistency and patience, most women find that the switch to Oestra® is smooth and appreciate the broader hormone support it is designed to provide.

If you ever feel unsure during your transition, our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Low-Dose Vaginal Estrogen

Products like:

  • Vaginal tablets

  • Low-dose creams

  • Local rings

Are designed to:

  • Treat vaginal dryness only

  • Deliver minimal systemic absorption

That’s why many studies describe them as “not systemic.”

Oestra® Is Different by Design

Oestra® uses:

  • Therapeutic (whole-body) dosing

  • A formulation designed for systemic absorption

The biggest difference between these treatments is their intended purpose. Low-dose vaginal estrogen products are generally designed to provide localized support for vaginal and urinary symptoms with minimal whole-body effects.

Oestra®, by contrast, is designed to provide broader hormone support throughout the body while also supporting vaginal and urinary health.

The vaginal route is capable of systemic delivery - it depends on the dose and formulation, not the route itself

Why Oestra® Works Systemically

  • The vaginal wall is highly vascular

  • Hormones enter the bloodstream directly

  • Blood levels increase in a dose-dependent way

What This Means for You

Oestra® can support:

  • Brain and mood

  • Bone health

  • Skin and metabolism

  • Vaginal and uterine tissue

Whereas low-dose products only target local symptoms.

Bottom Line

Low-dose vaginal estrogen is local therapy.
Oestra® is full-body hormone therapy using the same route—but at a therapeutic level.

Because Oestra® provides a different level of hormone support, some women notice an adjustment period as their bodies adapt during the transition.
