What is iodine?
Iodine is a mineral your body needs and can't make on its own. It plays an important role in your health, especially for your thyroid and breast tissue.
The two forms you'll see most often
Potassium iodide: the form most commonly found in supplements and fortified foods, such as iodized salt. It is most associated with thyroid support.
Molecular iodine: iodine in its elemental form. It is most associated with breast health.
Which form is preferred?
Our clinical team prefers molecular iodine. It is harder to find, which is why potassium iodide is so widely available. In theory, your body can convert potassium iodide into molecular iodine, so potassium iodide is still a common option.
Which one is right for you?
That depends on your health history, your goals, and your current medications. Too much iodine can be a concern for some people, so please talk with your care team before starting or changing an iodine supplement. Your care team can also guide you on how much is right for you.
Where can I find supplements?
Through our partnership with Fullscript, you can browse supplements that your care team may recommend. Please check with your care team first so they can guide you to what fits your needs.
As always, if you have questions, our team is here for you.
