Symptom Management & Side Effects

Updated over 3 weeks ago

What kind of side effects should I expect early on?

Most women tolerate Oestra® well. That said, temporary symptoms may include:

  • Breast tenderness

  • Mild cramping

  • Spotting or breakthrough bleeding

These typically resolve within a few weeks. Our care team can recommend supplements (like iodine and magnesium) to help ease the transition.

Is cramping normal—even if I haven’t had a period in years?

Yes. Cramping can be common when first starting Oestra® due to increased blood flow to the pelvis and tone of the uterus. While it’s uncomfortable, it’s usually part of the normal adjustment process.

Magnesium is great for reducing and preventing cramping, and it’s most effective when absorbed through the skin. Try Epsom salt baths (1–2 cups, 1–2 times a week). Iodine can also help prevent cramping and bleeding.

My breasts are sore—is that normal?

Yes. It’s very common and usually temporary. It’s often a sign of iodine deficiency. Starting a daily iodine supplement typically helps within a few weeks. Even after tenderness resolves, continuing iodine is a good idea for healthy breast tissue and hormone metabolism. You don’t need to wait for symptoms to start iodine supplementation.

Many choose to use iodine preventatively for hormone metabolism and breast health, beginning with a low frequency (1–3 times per week) if sensitivity is a concern. For managing symptoms, the recommended iodine dosage is 1500 mcg per dose, taken 1–7 times per week, adjusted based on sensitivity or thyroid health. Pairing iodine with selenium (100–200 mcg daily) can enhance thyroid protection and hormonal benefits.

Continuing with a lower maintenance dose (1–3 times per week) supports long-term breast tissue and hormone health, particularly for dense or fibrocystic tissue.

What if I feel worse before I feel better?

It’s possible. Your body is recalibrating, especially if your hormones have been off for years. Early symptoms like fatigue, cramping, or spotting can occur, but they usually improve over time. If they don’t, we’ll help adjust your dose.

Should I take supplements with Oestra®?

You do not need to take supplements automatically with Oestra®. A "less is more" approach is best and support is added only when your body shows signs that it needs it.

Common supportive options include methylated B vitamins, magnesium, iodine, and selenium. These are used based on the specific symptoms you might experience. If you are unsure what to take, or if symptoms persist, please reach out to the clinical team so we can guide you safely and appropriately.

Will I need to increase my dose later?

Most women do. We start you on a clinically effective base dose, but many women benefit from increasing it around Month 4 as your body stabilizes. Our care team will support this transition.
